The Question
I recently overheard a conversation where one guy was asking “Well, how can you tell if this is all random nature, or if God created it? Does God even exist anyway?” The group of twenty-somethings were chatting at a nearby table, the conversation good-natured, but quietly intense.
The Reflection
I wish I could’ve been part of their conversation because I often used to ask the same questions before I eventually got my answers.
Long story short, the more I looked for answers, the more I saw evidence that pointed me in the right direction. Truth be told, if I had not been so self-assured and stubborn I might well have completed that search much earlier. So, spoiler alert, I did come to recognize and embrace the truth that God is real, sovereign, and seriously desires to communicate with us.
I’ve met people with many viewpoints from my hiking buddy who believes “Yeah, there is something or some force out there…I’m just not sure what to call it…” to a work colleague who says the Bible is “just a load of rubbish…”
To each his/her own...I guess, but eventually I realized that God will reveal himself to those who seek to know more about him. He uses small things like a chance encounter, the beauty of birdsong, or the mind-boggling mysteries of his creation - but he will never force any of us to believe he is real.
The Bottom Line
We must make our own decision on this God question. It really is a matter of faith.
Follow Hebrews 11:6 and take another look at biology, chemistry, space…everything we can’t create ourselves or fully explain. For sure there is an awesome intelligence that demands our attention, our trust, our reverence.
My prayer from years ago might be a good starting point: “God, I see the signs of your existence, but I struggle with believing. Give me the faith to believe, and help me to find the truth of who you are.”
